We’re regularly out inspecting culverts so we though it would be worthwhile putting together a photo-journal of some of the more common defects that we encounter, along with some of the methods we use to get access to them and perform inspection.
Many of the structures we inspect are over 100 years old, are often listed structures and urgently require structural repair and strengthening. Age, weathering and increasing loads and stresses have, in numerous cases, led to problems such as:
– Separation of arch rings
– Cracking in the arch barrel
– Delaminated masonry
– Spreading barrels and soffits
– Cracked abutments and wing walls
– Spalling brickwork
